Dear Future Anthony

Dear Future Anthony,

I am writing to you as a 27 year old, 1st year Master of Architecture student. When you open this, it should be the 11th of April, 2036. I thought I would write this as a reminder…

You have probably worked on some cool projects, but you better not have given in to any greedy, money hungry developers?! I know they say the client is always right, but surely they can’t be right? They are destroying Melbourne at the moment, so I am hoping when you read this Melbourne has adopted the Nightingale model as the normal.

By now you probably are closing in on 2,000 Instagram followers, and your blog hitting 75 views a day but don’t let it go to your head. I hope by now you have written a couple archizines, published a few more posts and made a couple viral YouTube videos with at least 120 views!

Don’t get sucked in with the really cool technology that probably exists now, remember to always have trace paper, your sketchbook and Sharpies next to you. All the software in the world won’t make you a better architect, so I hope you still use the old tools.

I really hope you have traveled somewhere overseas by now! At 27 years old I’ve yet to set foot on another country’s soil, but when I’m 47 I hope I’ve traveled the world! If you haven’t traveled yet, seriously pack your bags now and go somewhere! Don’t even finish reading this letter, go to the nearest airport and jump on the next plane out of the country.

Remember the little ‘mantra’ you came up with… ‘Design honest buildings’ I hope the buildings you are designing now are still honest of place, time, space, material, form and story? Don’t ever forget that, an honest building is rare to find today, so I hope you haven’t given in and faked honesty.

Above all else, don’t let architecture take over your life. Sure I’m struggling now, but I hope by the time you read this I have balance. Don’t get me wrong, I hope you go to heaps of guest talks, maybe even speak at a couple yourself, go to Open Days, conferences and all that. However, if you have your own family by now, don’t work all weekend, spend time with them. I hope in the future you can balance work, family, marathons (seriously, in the next 20 years you had better ran at least 4 marathons!) and have some adventures.

I’m enjoying studying architecture as a student, but I hope working as an architect is even better. If I’m successful and really enjoying what I do, can you give me a sign?

Okay I’m a little worried but I’ll assume the curtain moving slightly is because of you and not the opened window.

Yours sincerely,

Present Anthony

This post is part of the ArchiTalks series in which Bob Borson from Life of an Architect selects a theme and a group of us (architects who also blog) all post on the same day and promote each other’s blogs. This month’s theme is ‘Dear Future Architects’  so I thought I’d write a letter to my future-self, who is hopefully a registered architect in 20 years…
